The Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper
is not the best public speaker, but I think biggest problem lies in the fact his speeches aren’t really that good. They have the basic points needed in them, but that is that - they are dry and without soul. The rhetoric used is downright pedestrian and often ill-born - it just doesn’t seem like how the leader of the Dominion should be speaking.
He needs to learn about structure and expectation, flow and style, tone and timbre, pace and rhythm, cadence and motion, allusion and anecdotes, metaphors and guiding stories, reversals and turn points and continuity and so much more.
When he addresses people, he isn’t simply speaking, he has the opportunity to make an impact, inspire and well, be relevant. I’m not saying he should make every speech a ream of empty rhetoric, rather put more thought into the words - public address can be a profound and oft, in a way, beautiful thing, however, it requires creativity and appreciation for the spoken word.
I really hope there is a politician out there in Canada with deft hand in rhetoric, or at least a speechwriter that can help along the way, ‘cause it would really be appreciated.
I’ve also taken to rewriting speeches by Canadian politicians to improve the presentation of the message - I should start mailing them to them. (:
